- FWB, Inc. Introduces Hard Disk ToolKit™
-
- San Francisco, California, January 10, 1991
-
- January 10, 1990, FWB, Inc. of San Francisco, California introduced Hard Disk
- ToolKit, a software utility package for the Apple Macintosh at the MacWorld
- Expo. Hard Disk ToolKit enhances the performance and utility of all Macintosh
- hard disk drives with embedded SCSI controllers by replacing the drive’s
- original installer software with a sophisticated formatter utility package.
-
- “FWB has been developing performance-oriented software for Macintosh hard
- drives since 1984. By using technology we developed in designing our top-rated
- Hammer hard drives, we have designed proprietary drivers that will maximize the
- performance and security of any SCSI hard disk,” according to FWB’s
- vice-president of engineering, Norman Fong. “Hard Disk ToolKit is a collection
- of five powerful programs that include an extensive array of features including
- true SCSI partitioning with password protection, advanced historical
- diagnostics, drive microcode optimization, and detailed benchmark analysis.”
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit consists of five separate modules: Hard Disk ToolKit
- Formatter, SCSI Control Panel™, FWB Benchmark™, HDToolKit INIT™, and the
- HDToolKit Prober™.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit Formatter maximizes hard drive performance with hand-tuned
- SCSI drivers and “true” low-level SCSI format. These intelligent drivers
- recognize both the type of Macintosh and hard disk used, automatically
- optimizing data transfer rates and protocols. Hard Disk ToolKit also maximizes
- hard disk space utilization, resulting in increased capacity for many hard
- disks, e.g. all Apple hard disks will increase in capacity by 2 - 8%. Full
- support for variable sized blocks is also included.
-
- The formatter also provides true SCSI partitioning for environments with
- multiple users and/or multiple operating systems including A/UX™ 2.0. Hard
- Disk ToolKit is fully AppleShare compatible. Password protection is available
- for individual partitions or for the entire hard disk. Unlike other password
- protection schemes available, Hard Disk ToolKit can encrypt all data
- on-the-fly, rendering the entire hard drive completely inaccessible; not only
- to unauthorized users but to the most sophisticated disk editing utilities,
- eliminating the need for cumbersome security software layered on top of the Mac
- operating system.
-
- Advanced historical diagnostics are also built-in to detect hidden bad sectors
- before they destroy data. A drive can be tested with any combination of 14
- different low-level SCSI tests. Any defects that are found are de-allocated and
- logged in the drive’s historical profile. This profile prevents marginal areas
- of the disk from being used in the future. Hard Disk ToolKit also includes an
- ultra-fast disk-to-disk SCSI Copy routine that quickly clones entire hard
- drives.
-
- SCSI Control Panel is the first program designed to optimize microcode on SCSI
- drives. Most drives have special operating parameters that can be altered to
- suit certain applications, yet up to now no program has allowed end-users to
- access and customize these fields. SCSI Control Panel supports standard SCSI-1
- and SCSI-2 operating parameters found in virtually all SCSI drives, allowing
- them to be optimized. Typical changeable parameters include cache control,
- pre-fetch control, error recovery control, and defect spare control. When
- coupled with Hard Disk ToolKit’s FWB Benchmark program, a user can actually see
- the results of SCSI Control Panel’s optimization. SCSI Control Panel also
- displays a comprehensive list of a drive’s physical and logical attributes.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit also includes FWB Benchmark, which evaluates hard disk
- performance. Unlike its public domain counterparts, this program has been
- designed to accurately measure performance of virtually any device. The
- program measures read/write data transfer rate, average access time, average
- seek time, transfer time vs. transfer size, and read/write transactions per
- second. The program weighs various real-world factors and calculates a
- performance index for a drive based on typical I/O access patterns of various
- Macintosh applications. FWB Benchmark supports hard drives, removable drives,
- eraseable optical drives, CD-ROM drives, network volumes, and RAM disks. The
- program includes a library function to save test results and to compare the
- performance of any group of drives.
-
- The HDToolKit INIT is a special Macintosh program that automatically loads on
- startup, adding operating system support for removable media drives. Highly
- configurable options allow the system to wait for slow drives to come online
- and to load drivers for removable drives that are started without media
- inserted.
-
- The HDToolKit Prober is a control panel device that scans the SCSI bus and
- displays all devices that are online. It is a useful diagnostic tool that can
- determine if a failing device can be recognized by the computer, or if a SCSI
- ID is not correct. The prober displays the name and type of the drive, as well
- as special information pertaining to the volumes present on the drive. An
- unmounted drive can also be mounted from this utility.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit supports all hard drives with an embedded SCSI controller,
- including removable and erasable-optical units. The program offers users an
- easy upgrade path to System 7.0, which will require a total re-write of SCSI
- driver software to use System 7.0's virtual memory capability.
-
- With Hard Disk ToolKit, users no longer have to wait for the drive manufacturer
- to upgrade software. ToolKit's wide support of SCSI devices allow corporate
- managers to standardized on one stable software platform, eliminating support
- headaches caused by idiosyncrasies inherent in different manufacturer's
- software.
-
- The retail price for Hard Disk ToolKit is $199.95. FWB products are available
- through most Apple dealers and software speciality stores. The program will be
- available at the beginning of the 2nd quarter, 1991. Hard Disk ToolKit is
- included free with all Hammer hard drive and cartridges drives systems
- purchased after January 1, 1991.
-
- FWB, Inc. has been developing products specifically for Macintosh hard drives
- since 1984. Their current products include the Hammer hard drives, optical
- drives, removable drives and tape backup systems.
